All football leagues
in France were stopped at least until September, following the prolongation of
the suspension of the main sporting events as a measure against the spread of
the coronavirus. The decision was
announced at the national assembly on Tuesday by Prime Minister Edouard Philippe and also concerns the Top 14
national rugby championship. Individual sports will instead be able to
gradually resume their activities from May.
Next week the French
football federation will meet with the leagues to decide what will become
of the current season - whether to continue it from September or cancel it -
and what to do in case of cancellation with the award of the national title,
promotions and relegations from one category to another and the qualifications
for the European cups. At the time of suspension Paris Saint-Germain was at the top of Ligue 1 with an advantage of 12 points on Marseille and 18 on
Rennes. Toulouse was instead last in the standings, with 10 points less than
the penultimate.
So far only Belgium and the Netherlands have definitively
ended the 2019/20 season of national football. The Belgian title has been
awarded to Club Brugge while the
Dutch one will remain vacant.
